After seeing a Chicago Graffiti Battle I took a shot at inking my own letters. There is quite a bit going on in this one but can you see them?
I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism in December 2008, found myself doing administrative work and missing my drawing board. If only there were a way I could get paid well to draw... I'm sure many of you Deviants can empathize.

A friend suggested I read "Ignore Everybody" by Hugh Macleod, cartoonist and creator of www.gapingvoid.com. Macleod's perspective on pursuing and surviving the creative world settled my discomfort for the over-inflated "artiste" mentality. It's stupid. The book entertains while encourages prospective creatives to stay in-tune with reality and adapting to modern ways as well as attitudes. You don't have to be a "martyr for the arts" especially when today's audience is all about working smarter and not harder. Read the book even for just a giggle.

Some friends suggested I get into technical drawing after I admitted to over-analyzing. Mark builds robots for fun and his brother, Kyle, graduated from Vincennes University with a 2-year degree in Mechanical Drafting and Design. He now works for Panasonic, is doing well and does whatever he wants in his spare time. He is getting PAID WELL to draw. Sign me up!

Nothing was holding me back so I began classes in August 2011, moved to Vincennes, Indiana and found a beautiful (affordable) loft downtown. My landlord even allows me to paint anything I want on my walls! He is planning to renovate the rest of The Gimbel Corner as artist studios and a gallery to showcase work. There are also some pending plans for me to do some mural work on his other buildings.

The choice of pursuing a career in drafting has been great so far. I really like the challenging coursework VU's Drafting and Design program demands and look forward to the opportunities. I can't wait to enjoy my career and be able to continue more creative work on the side... maybe incorporate the two.
